FAQ – Project Fatherhood

Home FAQ – Project Fatherhood
What is Project Fatherhood?

A weekly parent support group that places a significant focus on father in order to support them to become positively involved in the lives of their children.  Since its inception in 1996, more than 10,000 fathers have participated in the program and the numbers continue to grow.

How can Project Fatherhood help me?
A key component of the project is its intensive training approach that prepares professionals to lead “Men in Relationships” support groups.  During the program, a broad range of issues is addressed including father’s understanding of appropriate discipline, domestic abuse, communicating needs, and traumatic experiences in fathers’ backgrounds that affect their relationships with their children and partners.
When and where does Project Fatherhood meet?

We meet each Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at our offices on the grounds of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 E. 7th Street, Long Beach, CA  90813.

How long has Families Uniting Families been conducting Project Fatherhood?

Families Uniting Families was selected by Children’s Institute Inc. (CII) to receive start-up funds in the form of a one-year grant in October 2010.  These funds were a part of a federal grant that CII received over a five year period to initiate new fatherhood groups all over Los Angeles County.

Families Uniting Families proudly continues to serve our community since November 1, 2010.

How would I become enrolled in the program?

Being a father is the main requirement.  Also, it should be noted that the children do not need to be in your care.  For more information, call (562) 437-9224 and speak with one of our Project Fatherhood staff.  If you qualify, an intake appointment will be arranged.

Are these parent meetings approved by the children’s court?
Yes, these meetings meet the requirements from LA County Children’s Dependency Court (Monterey Park, CA) as the equivalent of “parenting classes”.  A letter regarding your admission to the program along with on-going attendance updates can be provided to your county social worker.
How much will Project Fatherhood cost me to participate?
The weekly parenting meetings are free of charge.
Who are the people who attend Project Fatherhood?
Our weekly support groups are attended by dads, their children and their significant others.  We generally have an average of 8 to 10 fathers attending our weekly sessions.  We have trained social workers, staff, social work interns, and volunteers who assist us in the management of the program.
How long does it take to complete Project Fatherhood?

The model is based on the “open” group format.  So, it is never technically completed.  Parenting is a constant matter that is always impacted by so many factors, including:  social, emotional, financial, academic, spiritual, and family environments.   Below are the phases and themes.  Again, we can provide update letters for those who have a court specific requirement.

How much government funding does Families Uniting Families receive for my participation?

Families Uniting Families receives no government support for the Project Fatherhood program.   100% of our funding is raised through community donations and foundation grants that provide the support for the food, staffing and case management services.

What parenting support does Project Fatherhood offer?
  • Intake and orientation
  • Individualized case management assistance
  • Parenting support and on-going education

*All Project Fatherhood support is free of charge.
